Social responsibility
Founded in 1968, during one of the darkest periods of South Africa’s history, the South African Council of Churches became one of the most prominent organisations to stand up to the apartheid regime.
Today, the SACC continues to unite South African churches and religious organisations and aims to be the moral compass of South Africa.
Safika supports the SACC as it advocates for social and economic justice, national reconciliation, the integrity of the natural environment, eradication of poverty, and contributing towards the empowerment of all those who are spiritually, socially and economically marginalised.
Other projects
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital
Safika is a major donor of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust which raised R1 billion to realise Nelson Mandela’s dream of creating a state-of-the-art, specialised paediatric facility to serve the children of Southern Africa.
The John Taolo Gaetsewe Development Trust
This rural trust receives substantial annual dividends from Safika subsidiary, Tshipi é Ntle. It was established to improve the quality of life of the people of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality in the Northern Cape Province.
The Chairman’s Trust
Safika’s Chairman’s Trust provides a vehicle for Safika to invest in initiatives that enrich the social fabric of South Africa. To date, the Chairman’s Fund has supported a number of young South Africans with the potential to succeed in business with the opportunity to study at prestigious universities and business schools. It has also supported nation-building initiatives implemented by the South African Council of Churches.

Black Professionals Scholarship Fund
Safika and many of its shareholders and employees support the Black Professionals Scholarship Fund (BPSF) which funds the studies of deserving university students and also provides mentorship to first year students, helping them to manage the transition from high school to university.
Education Africa
Safika is a long-standing supporter of Education Africa, a non-profit organisation that strives to assist disadvantaged South Africans in their quest to obtain a quality, relevant education.
